Cantilever Tubular Steel Armchair FN24 by Mücke-Melder, 1940-50s

Mücke-Melder’s version of the popular S411 from Thonet

The functionalist model FN24 by Mücke-Melder was produced under the license from Thonet by several companies, such as Hynek Gottwald – model EK34 and Robert Slezák – model K29.

After the Second World War these companies were nationalised and integrated in the Kovona NP (Czechoslovakia) in 1948.

This upholstered armchair is based on the original design of Marcel Breuer’s Spring Chair, for which Willem Hendrik Gispen designed the seat and backrest upholstery.

In the 1930s, tubular furniture began to adapt to the demands of customers who preferred upholstered furniture, so the upholstery contributed significantly to the success of this armchair type. Dutchman WH Gispen always believed that a chair must simply fulfil the function of sitting. Therefore, Gispen consistently designed his furniture with a comfortable seating experience in mind.

The licensed models for S411 differ in some way from the original and while preserving the overall impression provide a new look of this extraordinary popular piece of furniture.
The FN24 in particular has a “sporty” design being 8 cm higher on one side and having slightly lower depth and narrower width on the other.
