The functionalist model EK34 is a variant of S411 from Thonet
The popularity of S411 and its licensed version EK34, cf. catalog below, ensured production for a long time.
After the second World War the Hynek Gottwald company was nationalized but EK34 was produced further in the 1950s by Kovona NP (Czechoslovakia) as K108.
S411 was produced beside Thonet itself under the license by other companies as well, e.g. Mücke-Melder – model FN24, Robert Slezák – model K29, which differed in some way from S411.
The EK34 specifically differs from S411 by slightly larger dimensions and a lower position of the seat.
The difference in height between two armchairs was quite normal for the time of production – in the 1930s and 40s there was no frame that was identical to another, a difference in size of 1-2 cm was common.
Modern CNC machines for tubular steel chairs are capable of producing identical copies – so small differences in size of the same model can serve as an indication of production time.
The attribution is based on the labels (Ladislav Žák was the main designer for Hynek Gottwald),
