Univerzal Prostějov

Before the First World War, apartments were furnished with furniture that formed integrated furniture ensembles. They were so specific that individual pieces could not be combined with furniture from another collections. Due to the fact that many pieces of them were large this kind of furniture was not really practical.

After the war, the housing crisis and the lack of the furniture for flats of various sizes have determined the modern architectural trends. The functionalism which prioritized the function over the esthetic became a prevailed approach in the proposals of residential architects and furniture designers. The first attempts in the modularity of the furniture have taken place.

After the Second World War, when the problems similar to those as after the end of the First World War have arisen, the housing crisis and the lack of furniture were again addressed. Based on the previous pre-war development and in the continuation of it the modular design became a solution for small, medium and large-sized apartments.

Modular furniture, manufactured by Univerzal was part of the post-war effort to solve the housing crisis and furniture shortage. Their sectional furniture was designed to be practical and modular, allowing it to be easily adapted to different spaces and needs.

The furniture manufactured by the company were known for their simple and functional design and high-quality solid wood, often oak or beech. These materials were popular for their strength and durability, which ensured the longevity of the furniture.

The design was based on clean lines and a minimalist look, which was in line with the modernist trends of the time.
